We have been so busy….for most of 2014….even more so than usual and it is wearing on me. I don’t like being behind, and especially not being behind on EVERYTHING!! Spring and Summer came and went and there were a lot of things we weren’t able to get to. I have to walk past a flower bed…. twice a day…. on the way to the barn and I am reminded…. twice a day…. that I was not able to clean it out last year. Major guilt trip!
This year Jim and I were Christmas shopping on Christmas Eve!!! Unheard of for me!! For the first time in 40 years I did not make my traditional peanut brittle, peanut clusters, toffee or sugar cookies…unbelievable!!! Inconceivable!!!! The Christmas cards are on my desk….still…. waiting. In addition, we did not put up a Christmas tree this year….which brings me to the point of my story. I am behind in my domestic duties as well. I have done what I could with the time available…. the most important things mostly, bathrooms, laundry, vacuuming, etc. I have been noticing a lot of cob webs here and there and thought I would do some much needed deep cleaning today.
Several years ago I bought a very realistic pine tree with pinecones on it to use as a Christmas tree. When it is not being used as a Christmas tree, it sits in our sun room in a corner behind our willow couch. I started at one end of the room
cleaning from top to bottom and worked my way to where the tree sits peacefully in the corner. I saw a lot of cobwebs on the tree and moved the furniture out of the way to start dealing with those nasty cobs. I started in on the tree and noticed something strange…. a single sock….hanging like an ornament on
the tree. Now, the sock is a boy size….belonging to our 7 year old grandson. After I did the math, I realized that the last time he was here was in July….right before he went back to school!!! Horrors!!!! Has it been that long since I had cleaned behind that couch???? REALLY??? By now I am feeling like a worthless slug….a total waste of skin! About this time I notice another sock, and not the mate to the first sock….looking like another ornament on the tree!! Now I am smiling and chuckling a little. Seamus does not like to wear clothes in the house. If it was up to him, he would be clothed only in his super hero underwear…. well, maybe with a cape on! I had visions of him running through the house…. flinging his clothes as he went through. I am now laughing and enjoying the memories of his last visit. I ring up his father…. my oldest son…. and tell him what I have found. While we are talking on the phone I find a third sock. We are both laughing hysterically!!! By now I am no longer brow-beating myself for being such a sloth…. I am thankful that I found such wonderful reminders of his last visit!!! My cobs may be out of control, and my dust-bunnies are now dust-boulders rolling through the house, but we are fortunate enough to get to spend time with our kids and our grandson…. frequently….and they are a lot more fun than any cob I’ve ever had!
